Chinese talismans developed as a healing tradition rooted in shamanistic practices of the 1st and 2nd centuries B.C.. The symbols themselves represent a different type of calligraphy, separate from the Chinese language. Many were secret scripts often drawn in dust, burnt as offerings, swallowed as medicine, or danced in particular patterns that disappeared along with the ancient singers, drummers, and dancers who used them. I have found them to be powerful healers to this day.
